Suzannah “Suzie” Edwards, a Boothbay Region Elementary School eighth grader, received the school’s annual State of Maine Secretary of State Award in recognition of her outstanding citizenship, scholarship and leadership in school and community, on May 18 at BRES.

Making the presentation was Rep. Holly Stover (D-Boothbay) with BRES Principal Shawna Kurr, teachers Elizabeth Tilton (grade 7/8 math), Soren Barker (grade 8 social studies) and Mame Anthony (grade 7/8 science and math) and Cordelia Chase (Grade 7/8 English) in attendance.

Besides the State of Maine Secretary of State Award, Edwards also received a congratulatory letter from Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap and a copy of the nomination letter to Dunlap.

“Suzie actively contributes to numerous activities, and helps foster youth development and interest in many areas,” read the nomination letter. “ ... She also maintains a place on our Honor Roll, and she has done so consistently throughout her middle school career.”

The letter also pointed out her participation in the school’s musical programs (Concert Band, Early Ensemble, Jazz Band) and Chorus, where she was chosen as a member of the 2020 District III 7th/8th Grade Honors Chorus. She has also been a member of the Drama Club, LOAFS, and Jump Rope Club and reads the daily announcements each morning.

Her involvement in the community has included volunteering at Boothbay Railway Village for Halloween, singing and playing the ukulele for Youth Arts Month and singing the national anthem before a couple of Portland Sea Dogs games.

“However, Suzie’s greatest contribution is her ‘Fill the Boats’ fundraiser at Brady’s Restaurant ... a charity event that supports ... animals, clothing and food,” read the letter.

“There is a great deal more that Suzie could be recognized for as a leader in our school community. That is why it is with great confidence, pride and pleasure that we, as a teaching staff, recommend Suzannah Edwards for the honor of the Secretary of State’s Citizen Award.”

Suzie is the daughter of Steve Edwards of Boothbay and Miriah Swan of Thomaston.
