Two weeks ago, we announced that John and Jane Lunt are the co-chairmen of the 2015 Boothbay Region YMCA Annual Fund Drive.

We're not sure who chose these two community-minded people to chair the Y Drive, but we can't think of many other people who know the ins and outs of the YMCA as well as the Lunts.

With four generations of Lunt family having enjoyed what the Y has offered for 50-plus years, they should be successful in raising the funds the Y needs in order to operate as one of the top Y's in the state.

Thinking about what this Y has done for the youth of this community and the athletes who have benefited from their use of the gym, pool, weight rooms, track and other facilities (and the various programs associated with those facilities), if only for the shear enjoyment of the success of these athletes, the community should be more than willing to contribute to the annual fund drive.

Our high school basketball teams, track and cross-country teams, and a few years back, our swim teams, have been the envy of other communities that don't have access to a Y. In season and offseason, our high school athletes have been able to use the Y to get stronger, healthier and to hone their skills at various sports. Our high school coaches have also played a big part in the success of these teams, but our athletes have been able to get a head start in their athletic endeavors through the Y programs.

Some of those athletes have also gone on to compete at the collegiate level. We would like to think that the Y has played a part in their athletic success.

So, if you have enjoyed watching our athletes compete in the many post-season tournaments over the years, and want to continue to see our athletes succeed, consider supporting the facility which has provided a springboard to their athletic success.

We know the Lunts will be thankful you did.
