Sue Burge honored with Distinguished Service Award
When asked why she believed she was awarded the Maine School Boards Association's (MSBA) Distinguished Service Award, Sue Burge answered in terms of “we” and community.
“We have a unique opportunity to extend a helping hand,” she said. “Our community, our school board, and the educators behind us recognize the value of the Set for Success program.”
Burge was honored on Friday, Oct. 28 at the MSBA annual banquet before an audience of school board members and superintendents from across the state, and members of her family. Presenting the award, MSBA President Becky Fles said, “Thanks to Sue's vision and her commitment to children in the Boothbay region, the third Sunday in August has now become a day when the whole community comes together.”
Going into its sixth year in 2017, Set for Success is one of seven programs under the Boothbay Region Community Resources Council (BRCR) umbrella. Burge spearheaded the program, which outfits Alternative Organizational Structure (AOS) 98 elementary school children with backpacks, school supplies, and everything else from clothing to haircuts to prepare them for the upcoming school year. Fifty percent of AOS 98 elementary school students rely on free or reduced meals. Set for Success assists parents and teachers who might spend money needed elsewhere on supplies. All AOS 98 elementary school students, regardless of economic status, are invited to take part in the day.
Burge, who is president of the BRCR board, credits her love of service in part to something she read years ago. “My local church in Massachusetts had great outreach programs. And one particular book about women's ministries really inspired me. When I moved here in 2004, I had this idea tucked into my heart. I presented it to the BRCR council, and ran with it.”
AOS 98 Superintendent of Schools Eileen King, who nominated Burge for the award, said, “What Sue Burge has done for the students and families in this community is a model for our state. Her commitment to ensure that each and every child who enters school is prepared is commendable. Sue understands the costs associated with preparing to return to school and she has made it possible for every student to return to school 'set for success.'”
