The start of 'real summer'
At Ocean Point the playful attitude has arrived. We have had 11 family members with us for 11 days, a delightful confusion and change to the winter solitude. Some people call it chaos; we call it family. Our son, John and his fiance, Lucy, have been visiting us.
The everlasting yearly Horribles Parade and chicken barbecue officially started off the "real summer" for us. The Grimes Cove beach is buzzing with little children wading in the water. Several swimmers who brave the frigid 64 F waters step by step and others who use the boat dock method, just jump right in off the dock by the Inn yelling "wow" or other loud words that get cut short as they hit the water.
On the tennis court there has been matches that draw attention that rival the professional matches (almost.). The food sale was very tastefully set up and the goodies disappeared rapidly. When I saw the sale, the food was delicious, most of it sold, and the focus had moved on to the raffles and prizes that caught the younger group's challenges with cupcakes in hand.
There was a well-attended evening literary gathering for Barbara Walsh's Pulitzer Prize book, "The August Gale," a spellbinding true story of an Irish family, its trials and a violent storm at sea.
The first pancake breakfast was served the next day on July 13. All these events have been very well attended and enjoyed.
The Sunday ball games have begun. Upcoming events include the Men's Memorial Golf Tournament on July 20 and a Porch Party at 5:30p.m. The "Take me out to the ballgame Grill" will be ready after the game is over on Sunday, July 21.
Last week's game results: The summer softball season is off to an exciting start. On July 6th, the Bertrand team came out strong and shut out the Yerrall team 11-0. The following day, the Yerrall team responded with a 5-3 victory over the Bertrand team.
The game on July 14 was another win for the Yerrall team as they beat the Bertrand team by a slim margin of 1 point (the final score was 4-3). Stay tuned as game play continues to heat up.
