Avery Williams took advantage of an open goal during a flurry of short passes in front of the net and scored the winning goal as the Spruce Mountain Phoenix defeated the host Boothbay Region Seahawks, 2-1, in overtime in Class C field hockey on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Williams’ goal came at the 2:20 mark of the eight-minute overtime period.

The well-played game saw Boothbay have its chances to win the sudden-death game but the Seahawks could not capitalize on four penalty corners in the overtime period. Phoenix goalie Sydney Shaffer made 14 saves on 12 shots by Boothbay.

Boothbay scored its only goal at the 6:40 mark of the first half when Page Brown passed to Chloe Arsenault who drove the ball past Shaffer from about five feet away on the right side of the goal.

About three minutes later, Spruce Mountain tied the game on a goal by Emily Castonguay.

As time expired in the first half, Boothbay was awarded a penalty corner. During a barrage of shots, Shaffer fell on the ball so Boothbay was awarded a penalty stroke. An attempt by Sydney Meader was stopped by Shaffer.

Boothbay’s defense played well in the second half, stopping several charges to the goal by the speedy Phoenix. Overall, Seahawk goalie Emily Amaral made 11 saves on 13 shots on goal by Spruce Mountain.

With the loss, Boothbay dropped to 12-2 to conclude the regular season and finished in third place in Class C North. Spruce Mountain improved to 10-4 and is ranked second in Class C South.
