The Special Olympics Tennis state competition was held at Bates College Sept. 24 and eight Boothbay region athletes competed.

Ronda LeConte competed in the fifth division, double elimination singles competition and took fourth place and Valerie Giles played level three singles bringing home a bronze medal.

Skills athletes also competed well. Blake Chadwick took fifth place; Vincent Giles, a bronze medal; Gracie Giles, gold; John Piper Rankin, fourth; Coyle Lawler, gold; and Anthony Angelico, silver.

There were many fans in the stands cheering on the athletes: Cora McKenny, Amber Hyson, Izabelle Hamlin, Zander Blake, Lucian Stoddard, Jameson Brooks, Brently Maxcy, Radian Hutchins and Cole Walby.

Athletes and classrooms were also presented with some generous donations. Southport summer church All Saints by-the-Sea’s Pam Baldwin and Seth Stewart presented checks to Toby LeConte and Charlinda Carlson’s classes to assist with current and future programming.

“In recent years, the church's Governing Committee has been looking for ways to expand our outreach to the community,” said a representative from the church. “The Governing Committee unanimously voted to approve whatever funds were needed to ensure your students had the whatever they needed this year to facilitate their education at Boothbay Region Elementary School. We are thrilled to be of some small help to the region's youth.”
