Southport Scouts attend Camporee

Wig wag signaling, tomahawk throwing and blow gun shooting were just three of the many activities that Scout Troop 238 from Southport Island participated in at the 50th Anniversary International Moosehorn Camporee in Baring, Maine, on September 21-23.
En route to Baring, located on the border with New Brunswick, Canada, the Scouts visited the Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in East Orland to learn about Atlantic salmon, and also visited the Birdsacre Sanctuary in Ellsworth for a lecture about owls.
Over 750 Scouts from Maine and the Canadian Provinces attended the Camporee. Other activities offered included: ham radio, a demonstration on duck banding by the Moosehorn Sanctuary staff, a demonstration by the K-9 unit featured on the television show, “Northwoods Law,” walking stick lashing instruction, a troop Scout skills competition, mountain bike relay, Mooseman competition, Dutch oven cooking contest (Troop 238's adults won third place with their Kitchen Sink Stew) and a campfire with skits and live music.
On the way home, the troop visited a rock shop on Verona Island, the Penobscot Narrow Observatory, and Fort Knox. Troop 238 was joined by their friends, Peter and Ethan Nadeau from Troop 310 in Saco, and camped beside Bill Benner and his Troop 215 from Thomaston. Jacob Bishopp celebrated his birthday with the troop, enjoyed cake and presents, and had Happy Birthday sung to him by a troop of Canadian Girl Scouts, at which point Jacob said, “This is the best birthday ever!”
