Southport Column: Storm, kind gestures and June’s poem
Southport seemed to fair well in the wind and rain storm on Monday, Dec. 18. A few trees were down, one near the Methodist Church. I heard one did fall on a house and the support structure for the deck and float at All Saints by-the-Sea was badly damaged, so it is not safely passable. Although we lost power for about 19 hours, beginning Monday night around 9:14 and lasting until 4 p.m. Tuesday, we were better off than some folks in the state. For some reason, although my computer is working for most tasks, the storm did wipe out my ability to get or receive email. Spectrum help me return the function to my iPhone but not to my iPad or my laptop. So if you have news or need to reach me, best to phone me at 633-0672. Perhaps my grandsons can untangle the problem when they come for Christmas dinner.
The Southport Memorial Library was a big help to the community on Tuesday as they had generated power, plus coffee, hot chocolate and cookies for their holiday open house. People could come to get warm, get a treat, hear music, read, chat with friends and use the internet. A very special place, our library.
Another helpful gesture, this time from the Southport Island Association, was a pizza lunch served by Maddie Kaler to the workmen on the Southport bridge on Friday, Dec. 22. On such a cold day, I am sure it was a treat. Thanks Maddie and the SIA.
I see from the obituary section in last week’s paper we have lost another Southporter. Kathy Barter died on Dec. 14. A memorial service will be held for her on Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Southport United Methodist Church with a reception following at the Southport Town Hall.
Now, I promised you last week a present from June Elderkin. We all know June as an artist but did you know she is also a poet? Here is one of her recent poems titled “Ode to a Clam.”
