Southport Column: Firemen’s Auction and more

Tue, 08/14/2018 - 6:00pm

Thursday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m., a service of remembrance and thanksgiving for Cy Seifert will be held at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. A reception will follow the service at the Southport Town Hall.

Southport was the island of arts and crafts last weekend with one show at the boatyard sponsored by Lincoln Arts and one show at the Southport Yacht Club sponsored by the club and honchoed by Leal Brinegar.  We have no excuses to have bare walls or lack of gifts given all the beauty on display.  Look for another article elsewhere in the paper.

As you can tell from the items piling up around the firehouse, the Firemen’s Auction is this Saturday, Aug. 18.  Come early at 6 a.m. for flea market items, stay for the yard sale beginning at 7 p.m., and then the live auction begins at 9 a.m.  Even if you do not think you need another thing, the event itself is lots of fun with good food being provided across the street by the island school families.  So eat to support the school and buy to support our firemen.

It is hard to believe that by the time the auction takes place, Southport Yacht Club sailing classes will be over for the season. The banquet for young sailors will be Friday night, Aug. 17, with the closing reception for older sailors the next week on Aug. 25. How can the summer have gone by so fast?  We can only trust it will come around again.

We hope many readers had a great time at the Southport Island Association (SIA) picnic last Tuesday evening, and that you will all come on Sunday, Aug. 19, to the SIA Annual Meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Newagen Inn.  Please bring an appetizer to share. After a short meeting and a few words from our outgoing president, Mr. Gardiner Rapelye, you can meet new board members and enjoy some fellowship with your Southport friends and family. Kids are welcome to come and have fun at activity table that will be available for them.

Continuing on Thursdays during the month of August, “Land for Southport’s Future”will host weekly brown bag lunch gatherings at the Southport Memorial Library from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Bring your lunch if you wish; coffee and iced tea are provided. The discussion will focus on the actions that we can take now to guarantee public access to our shoreline for the generations to follow. While at the library be sure to view a display of photo copies made from the antique glass plates found in the archives of the Hendricks Hill Museum. Sponsored by the Friends of the Southport Historical Society, the display is entitled "A Look Back: West Southport in the 1890s.”

At Newagen Inn music continues in the Pub from 7 to 9 p.m. provided by   “Double Entendre” on Sunday, Aug. 19, and Charlie Barrale on Monday, Aug. 20. Dave Gagne performs at the Lobster Bake on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Please call the inn for tickets to the bake. Storyteller Andrea Kamens weaves her tales beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22, when you can also enjoy s’mores, math tricks and magic! All events are open to the public.

Save Aug. 21 for another “Open Mike” night, which will occur at the Island Store from 7 to 9, weather permitting. Guitars will be featured.
