Some official town business
What is the blue that’s in the fall sky? Something different about this color, especially when the afternoon sun catches the great jumble of green, orange, red and yellow.
Anyone spot a white dingy along the eastern shore? Pat Smith and Dick Tucker have lost their sailboat dingy. It’s an 8-foot fiberglass white pram, blue on the inside, with the name FREDA on the stern in black letters, last seen tied to the community dock of the McCarty Cove Homeowners’ Association. If anyone finds it, please call Dick at 207-882-7965, many thanks!
This Saturday, the Maine Craft Association is sponsoring its first Maine Craft Saturday. Westport fiber artist Diane Langley is part of this statewide event. Her Wildwood studio and gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The studio is on the right heading south, in the old North End School House (just before Doggett Road on the left).
If you’re coming from Route 1, it’s a quick 10 minutes down Route 144; once past the end of the bridge, the studio is 1¼ miles on your right (look for the Wildwood sign). Come by to see rug hookers demonstrating their craft and take a look at the contemporary Boro on display (this is a unique Japanese folk fabric).
You’ll see hand-made quilts, original-design rugs, art, and small hand crafts, and enjoy apple cider and lumber jack cookies (the recipe comes from a 1921 lumber camp). Diane is an accomplished artist in different media, and very well-known for her teaching. For more info about this Saturday, send her an email at wildwood3@gwi.net.
Heads up on the November statewide referendum voting on five bond issues. Absentee ballot applications are now available in the Town Clerk’s Office. They can be picked up or filled out in person, requested by telephone or online at: www.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/AbsenteeBallot/index.pl.
The bond votes include financing for a wide variety of transportation projects, and specific investments at Maine Maritime Academy, the Maine Community College System, the University of Maine System, and the Maine Army National Guard. Town Clerk Gaye Wagner also said that Absentee or Early Voting will start this Thursday at the Town Office during regular business hours.
On another official note, the town received word from the State Commissioner of Education that our Westport Island Withdrawal Committee has been granted another extension for submitting its Withdrawal Agreement. The new deadline is December 7, 2013.
Grabbing a sweater these days? Closing your windows a little earlier? How about being part of the next wave of weather-tight homes in town by installing low-cost, energy-saving window inserts. The town has a great team of really skilled volunteers who, with low-cost materials, will make custom-sized inserts that easily pop into your existing window frames.
We all like keeping warm air in and cold air out, saving dollars and being comfy while the snow falls. Let’s find 20 homes to make a little tighter! Talk with Bill Hopkins (207-882-6047) or Newt Blakesley (207-882-4753) to learn more.
Dennis and Rhonda’s pair of maples on the Main Road turned their usual glorious red and orange in a flash it seems! Plenty more green to turn, so could the nice temps outlast our outdoor projects? What’s on your fall to-do list? Keep in touch at mewbarnes2@yahoo.com or 207-882-6055.
