A Sight to Sea
The last week of the 2026 summer program at the Boothbay Sea and Science Center was filled with exploration, creativity, and plenty of fun! Our campers took a closer look at the birds that call the coast of Maine home, learning about species found both onshore and offshore. We headed out on Linekin Bay aboard BSSC’s lobster boat to observe birds in their natural environment and watch their behaviors up close. Back on the shore, campers continued their learning through bird-themed crafts, birding on the pier using ID books and binoculars, and exciting games like “Steal the Egg.”
As we learned about bird diets and what different species eat, we added a hands-on experience with a Green Crab dissection. Campers got an up-close look at the anatomy of a prominent invasive coastal species while connecting their observations to the diets and food webs of Maine’s marine birds.
To finish the week, campers competed in our much-anticipated “Animal Olympics”! Mizzens and Stay’s’ls worked together through an obstacle course, tug-of-war, lobster band relays, rope-toss, and many other fun games and competitions. The grand finale of the “Olympics” was a dance-off, featuring choreographed routines created by the campers to songs of their choice. The performances were adorable and showcased the creativity, confidence, and enthusiasm of our campers. The groups also completed a triathlon, which challenged them to swim, rig and derig a Turnabout, and row a set course in the Bay.
From observing seabirds on the water to working together in competition, this week was a wonderful mix of science, adventure, teamwork, and fun. We are so proud of everything our campers accomplished and the energy they brought everyday as we close out our summer season at BSSC.
As weather would allow, on the sailing side the Stay’s’ls (ages 9-17) and the Mizzens (ages 5 – 8) did a mix of waterfront and on the water activities that included sailing the keel and Turnabout sailboats, kayaking, and rowing. Our Turnabout fleet sailed to Perch Island where they formed a daisy chain from the back of our anchored chase boats. A swim to and from the island was enjoyed by all. Ongoing was work towards earning skill beads. Our annual end of “Summer Olympics” wrapped up the summer program with competitions that magnificently demonstrated skills learned. It was an amazing way to wrap up the summer program for the offseason!
