The Boothbay Region High School varsity boys basketball team won the 2020 Mountain Valley Conference Championship in Lewiston Saturday with a 49-47 victory over rival Winthrop. Boothbay took its first lead of the game with just 41 seconds to play.

The first period saw Winthrop jump out to a 15-8 lead behind three three-pointers. Winthrop led at the half 31-24 as the Seahawks played even with them. Boothbay narrowed the gap some in the third period and closed the deal in the final period.

Thanks to a breakaway basket by Hunter Crocker, the Seahawks got their first lead with under a minute to play. After that, Sullivan Rice made one of two free throws to make the lead 49-47. With 2.5 seconds left, Winthrop took a timeout and had the ball under the Boothbay basket. They tried the same full court pass that Duke made famous with Christian Laettner hitting a buzzer-beater in 1992. The pass was right on, but Crocker intercepted the full court pass to end the game.

The Seahawks had balanced scoring for the game. Kaeden Davis had 12, Rice 11, Ben Pearce 11 and Crocker 10. Pearce was the leading rebounder with six.

Gavin Perkins was the only Rambler in double figures with 15.
