Seahawks relish short-lived victory before two losses
The Boothbay baseball team started the week strong with an upset win against Class C Maranacook. Their taste of victory was short lived, however, as the Seahawks lost to both Lisbon and Madison in the following days. Boothbay is currently 3-6 for the season, ranked fourth in Class D south.
May 14, the Seahawks lost 6-5 at Lisbon. Lisbon took their lead by scoring four runs in the second inning and another in the third. Boothbay responded by scoring a run in the fourth inning and two each in the sixth and seventh. However, Lisbon managed to seal the game with a final run in the seventh.
Boothbay had six hits and three errors. Lisbon had two hits and two errors.
For Boothbay, Liam Jacobs, Sam Markowitz and Shawn Gamage had a hit and scored a run each. Aidric Canada also scored a run and Tyson French had an RBI. Les White, Maddox Cusumano and Mason Paquette each had a hit. The final run was unaccounted for.
Seahawks Jacobs and Aiden Locke pitched. Combined, they threw 11 strikeouts and allowed nine walks and four earned runs. Boothbay struck out nine times, walked four times and had one earned run.
May 16, the Seahawks lost 8-1 to Madison at Boothbay. The game started out well for the Seahawks as Boothbay matched Madison’s game-opening run with their own. However, the Bulldogs quickly outpaced their hosts, scoring once in the second inning, twice in the third and four times in the sixth.
Boothbay had five hits and five errors, and Madison had no errors and nine hits.
At bat, Markowitz had a hit and scored a run. Cusumano had an RBI and one hit. Gamage also had a hit.
Cusumano, Canada and Casey Phelps pitched for Boothbay. Combined, they threw nine strikeouts and allowed five walks and three earned runs. Boothbay struck out 11 times, walked once and had one earned run.
May 13, In a surprising seventh-inning upset, the Boothbay baseball team eked out a 4-3 win against Maranacook, at the time ranked number one in Class C South.
The teams held each other at bay until the third inning, when the Black Bears scored three runs on errors, according to Boothbay coach Ed Crocker. The Seahawks responded in the sixth, tying the game with three runs including a strong call from Cusumano.
By the bottom of the seventh inning, the score was still 3-3. At bat, Phelps knocked the ball down the right field line, giving Jacobs the opportunity to score the winning run.
Overall, Phelps had two hits and an RBI. Jacobs, Cusumano, Markowitz and Matthew Reed each scored once. Gamage also had an RBI.
Canada, Phelps and Jacobs pitched for Boothbay, striking out five and allowing seven walks. Maranacook struck out 11 and allowed four earned runs and eight walks.
