Seahawks edge Cougars in 2OT

Senior tri-captain Sarah Caron scored on a driving shot with 7:14 left in the second overtime period to give Boothbay a 2-1 win over the visiting Dirigo Cougars in field hockey action Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 25.
The second eight-minute overtime period saw Caron dribble the ball from about 30 yards out and past the last Dirigo defender to where she was one-on-one with the goalie. She shot the winning goal from about 10 feet away.
The evenly-matched teams battled for 58 minutes without scoring when Dirigo's Emma Lueders received a pass from Ellie Wainwright in front of Boothbay goalie Madison McCarthy (12 saves). Lueders scored with 1:55 to play in regulation.
After the goal, Boothbay Coach Kaitlin Iuzzolino called timeout. The Lady Seahawks immediately applied pressure and when Dirigo's goalie jumped on the ball in front of the net, Boothbay was awarded a penalty stroke – a one-on-one situation where a player takes one shot at the goal from about 21 feet away.
Senior tri-captain Arden McSwain, who had been stopped on a penalty stroke early in the first half, pushed the ball past the goalie's left shoulder for the tying goal with 1:32 to play.
In the first overtime, where teams only play with seven players, both teams had scoring chances, as Dirigo's goalie made three saves and the Cougars missed two open shots.
Dirigo (3-6-1) had five penalty corners while Boothbay (2-8) had 10.
The win stopped an eight-game losing streak for Boothbay. In the past week, they lost 2-0 at St. Dom's on September18 and 4-0 to Lisbon on Friday, September 21.
