Rotary’s look to the future through lens of local young adults

Tue, 12/01/2020 - 7:00am

Rotary, like all of our reputable local service clubs, are looking to the future to determine how we can continue our good works with the current economic and health challenges that we face.

One initiative is to offer the Rotary experience to young adults at a cut membership rate. The pilot program  promises to bring creative energy and youthful views, and ambitious ideas into our action planning and service projects.

Jumping on this train are a number of younger adults who, like seasoned Rotarians, believe that nothing is impossible through Rotary’s mission of “Service Above Self.” These young adults  are talking advantage of Boothbay Harbor Rotary’s 18-35 program of half price dues and first year “scholarships” offering the first five inductees an opportunity to help make the town, country, or world a better place.

Among these ordinary persons who have signed up to do extraordinary things are grads of Boothbay Region High School and others. Most recently inducted are thee: the owner of  Second Cup, an IT  program specialist, and a recent grad of Maine Maritime, Brad Tibbetts.

Brad recently graduated from Maine Maritime Academy and is currently using his skills in the Gulf of Mexico as third mate on the bridge of Globetrotter 1, a 650-foot-long drill ship owned and operated by Noble Drilling. Brad’s schedule will generally be a month on and a month off allowing him to come home, be with his family, friends and travel.

Why Rotary? Brad answers “I grew up in Boothbay Harbor and have seen the incredible things the Rotary does for our community, especially their commitment to providing scholarships through the student aid fund. By joining Rotary I hope to take an active role in projects that help to keep young families here and attract new ones including encouraging new innovative year-round businesses with a focus in the maritime industry.”

If you, like Brad Tibbetts, Florin Iugas, Tory Paxson, Ivan deGroote and other young Rotarians, want to make a mark in the world, we in Rotary offer you our support and leadership raining through a low rate membership. Contact a Rotarian at 410-353-3861.
