River Arts in Damariscotta invites the public to meet the artists and join in celebrating the opening of three shows. The reception is Friday, Oct. 25 from 5-7 p.m. The Main Gallery swells with selections of juror Michel Droge for River Arts’ exhibition “Abstraction.”

This expansive show reveals the strength of abstract art in Maine and is a must see for anyone curious about contemporary art. Featured works include Maine artists Tom Flanagan, David Estey, Doreen Nardone, James Chute, John Lorence, Jaap Helder and many others. Artists have encompassed a wide range of abstract concepts with excellent creations of geometric, minimal, expressionist, and lyrical abstraction. For a taste of the avant-garde in Maine, this River Arts’ juried show “Abstraction” is terrific. This show runs until Nov. 23.

Jill and John Butke are in the West Gallery of River Arts with their combined show “Weaving and Painting.” Jill’s sophisticated, woven textiles are beautifully designed into a variety of scarves, cocoons, shawls and capes. John’s watercolor and oil paintings feature works from a recent trip to Mt. Katahdin. Various views in his distinct style of this mountainous icon are a joy to see. This show runs until Oct. 30.

The Invitational Hall boasts a members’ exhibition of “Plein Air” works featuring the landscape of Maine. With 30 participating artists, this show has a delightful array of works created in the open air. This show runs until Nov. 23.

River Arts is located at 241 Route 1 (north) in Damariscotta. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
