Harbor Fest 2013

The ripple effect of Harbor Fest

Wed, 10/02/2013 - 9:00am

The talented efforts of the Boothbay Register reporting team have allowed us to relive the “fun time had by all” throughout Harbor Fest weekend.

Hundreds of people attended six major events in Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor, beginning on Friday and going straight through to Sunday afternoon. For complete stories, entertaining footage, an expansive photo gallery and contest winners click here.

However, there is a side to event success that isn’t always as quantifiable: the financial return. A weekend of well-attended festivities may not show up in the cash drawer of every business at the end of the day, but the ripple effect is as priceless as it is intangible.

Here are a few of the positive ripple effects created by Harbor Fest weekend:

  • Event beneficiary, Boothbay Sea and Science Center, raised over $550 for the organization;
  • Team Dyer Neck raised over $1,000 for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing in the Harbor Fest 5k. 150 people registered, including folks from Brunswick, Harpswell, Portland, Massachusetts and Delaware;
  • The following media attended weekend events: Dispatch Magazine, Lincoln County Magazine, Boothbay Register, 92 Moose Radio, Getting Away Together, Coastal Journal and Robert Mitchell Photography;
  • Increased sales during events were reported by several businesses;
  • One hundred and twenty online ticket sales for the Chili & Chowder event included out of state visitors from Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, Connecticut and Florida, plus in-state visitors from Augusta, Belgrade, Vassalboro, Sidney, Kittery, Elliot, Yarmouth, Portland, South China and Auburn;
  • More than 100 tickets were sold in the park on Saturday and included visitors from Essex, England, Canada, Kansas, Kentucky and a group that arrived by boat and decided to stay for the festivities;
  • Lori Geraci of Harrison, Ohio reported that she had so much fun at Harbor Fest last year that she planned her return trip around the event this year;
  • The DeGhetto/Bonizzi family returned for year two and this time won the Treasure Hunt grand prize of $500 in local treasures. Gina DeGhetto wrote: “My family (14 of us, ranging from ages 11-80) wish to thank you for the fantastic time we had at Harbor Fest 2013. We have vacationed on Southport Island for last 18 years, in the fall months. It was so wonderful to have so many different activities to participate in this year. We shopped and visited many stores during the Harbor Crawl Friday Night. We got a lot of fresh air and exercise for the Scavenger Hunt on Saturday and worked up much needed appetites for the Chili and Chowder Challenge Saturday night. What a great opportunity to meet and support local business owners. We can't wait for Harbor Fest 2014”;
  • Dispatch magazine reported “a Facebook post about Boothbay Harbor Fest reached over 1,100 (and counting) and has one of the highest engagement rates ever for one of our posts”;
  • Lucia Davies, Editor in Chief of Dispatch Magazine said this about her first ever visit to the Boothbay Harbor Region: “2013's Boothbay Harborfest has left some enormous deck shoes to be filled for 2014's event! Besides the custom-ordered weather (glorious) and awesome people (everyone), I was delighted to snoop through all the different shops and enjoy their creative window designs .... The impression I'll always carry with me, was that deep pink sunset over the waters lazily lapping at the Rocktide Inn’s dock, as stars began to sparkle in the darkening sky. If there's a heaven, it can't be any prettier than that.”
