Ramblers edge Boothbay in overtime, 75-69

Down 25 points in the second quarter, 35-10, the Boothbay Region Seahawks battled back to send the game against Winthrop into overtime Tuesday night when Hunter Crocker nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end regulation, 64-64. However, the Ramblers capitalized on made free throws in the extra frame and won, 75-69, at home.

Crocker, who led Boothbay with 29 points, scored 16 points in the final quarter. After Winthrop missed two free throws with 6.6 seconds to play, Boothbay pushed the ball down the court to Crocker waiting on the left sideline and he hit the tying 3-pointer.

In the second half the Seahawks stepped it up defensively and after three periods trailed by only 12 points.

“Winthrop came out hot in the first period and developed a sizable double-digit lead, said Seahawk coach I.J. Pinkham in an email on Wednesday. “We could have hung it up at that point, but the kids regrouped and got themselves back in the game. They deserve a lot of credit for that. We didn’t make a lot of adjustments at half time. We just started doing things better both offensively and defensively.”

Boothbay lost two of its scorers, Kaeden Davis and Kaleb Ames, to fouls late in the final quarter.

In the overtime Winthrop scored first to take the lead, and Boothbay was forced to foul as time was running out. Winthrop made enough free throws in overtime to seal the victory. For the game Winthrop was 22 for 32 from the foul line and Boothbay was 11 for 15,

Top-seeded Winthrop improved to 13-1 with the victory. Boothbay, seeded third at the beginning of the night, fell to 11-3.

Davis added 17 points and Ben Pearce 12 for the Seahawks, who are scheduled to play fourth-seeded Hall-Dale in Farmingdale Thursday night. Pearce and Nick Morley were the Seahawks leading rebounders with seven each. 

Cam Hachey had 23 points to lead Winthrop, Ryan Baird added 20 and Gavin Perkins 12.
