Preschoolers explore math and science
Preschool aged children throughout the Midcoast area have been warmly welcomed at the Seeds of Knowledge Education Center in Wiscasset in their new science and math program called Seedling Explorers.
Boys and girls, ages 3 to 5, come to class each Friday excited to see what Mrs. Albert has placed in the mystery box, which contains the surprise topic of the day. The children eagerly gather in a circle on the carpet as the box is opened, revealing an object like a prism for the topic of light or a box full of snow.
During the class on snow, the children made snowmen snow gauges out of paint sticks and practiced measuring the depth of snow. They also did an experiment where they measured and compared the amount of snow in a cup to that same amount of snow that had been melted into water. The children discovered that a small amount of water can make a greater amount of snow!
In another class, the children were surprised to see that the box was empty. They quickly learned that the box wasn't empty at all, but it was actually filled with air. That day the children engaged in experiments to learn more about the properties of air.
Seedling Explorers is a parent-tot class that allows children to make new discoveries using active, hands-on learning. A new session for this class begins in January. For more information or to register for this class, visit www.seedsofknowledgeec.com or call 207-841-2704.
