Poetry of Wine celebration fundraiser a success
The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library celebrated a special event on Saturday evening, September 14, at Mine Oyster, titled The Poetry of Wine, with over one hundred people attending. As people arrived they were treated first to a table of champagne and oysters on the half-shell. Located throughout the restaurant were five tables set with delicious food and wines representing the culinary traditions several countries
A great time was had by one and all, with folks strolling from table to table sampling the great wine and food while enjoying the music. Library trustee Elena Smith (co-owner with her husband Ralph Smith of Mine Oyster) was the hostess for the evening, introducing the poets in attendance, and even reciting a favorite Russian poem of hers, which she had translated into English.
The poets in attendance who read from their work were Emily Breitner of Bristol, Gaylord Day Weston of Belgrade, Elizabeth Koopman of Hallowell, and George Van Deventer of Bristol. The evening was capped off by poet laureate emeritus Betsy Sholl of Portland reading from her extensive repertoire, which even included a poem with jazz accompaniment.
While all this was going on folks visited the silent auction tables and placed bids on the many great items available for consideration, such as stays at the many area B&Bs, and gift certificates provided by many of the local businesses who support the Library.
The evening would not have been possible without the generosity of Elena and Ralph Smith who provided the food and Mine Oyster restaurant location free of charge. The handsome posters advertising the event were designed pro bono by Atomic Studios of Boothbay Harbor.
The event was a successful kick-off to the Library’s 2013-14 Annual Appeal, beginning the process of raising the $65,000 needed to help fund its operation. Library Director Tim McFadden, summed up the evening, “We can’t begin to express the gratitude we have toward all those who worked so hard to make this evening a great success. What a great way to come out and support the library while having a good time doing it.
“I think everyone left feeling a sense of community engagement and participation. This is what makes the BHM Library special — its people. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.”
