‘Perfect Ganesh’
The River Company’s summer production is Terence McNally’s play “The Perfect Ganesh.”
Written in 1993, the play tells the story of two middle aged, wealthy, but bored women from Connecticut who set out on a two-week trip to India for a different kind of vacation.
Both have been friends for a long time, both are carrying painful memories they are trying to come to terms with from tragedies in their lives, and they are very different women.
The title refers to the Hindu god Ganesha, meaning wisdom, who is sometimes hilarious, always compassionate, and who travels with the women appearing in many different forms and different characters.
There is a lot of humor in the fact that the women are very American, travelling in a very different country. They find their true selves by experiencing the humanity of India by the end.
Shows are at Porter House Meeting Hall in Skidomphia Library in Damariscotta on July 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 22, at 3 p.m.
The cast
