Pandemic Pomp: BRHS to hold outside Grand March, graduation

Fri, 05/07/2021 - 8:30am

Sherman Field at Boothbay Region High School will take on two new activities in June as school administrators are planning to hold the traditional Grand March and graduation exercises for the first time ever there. Should it rain, however, the events will be held at Boothbay Region YMCA's field house.

The Grand March was not held last year due to the pandemic but it is scheduled to be held this year on Thursday, June 10 at 8 p.m. under the lights at Sherman Field. According to BRHS senior class advisor Allan Crocker, each senior class member will be able to invite four people to the event. It will not be open to the public but Boothbay Region TV and the Boothbay Register will be covering this event and other Graduation Week ceremonies. Should the weather not cooperate, the Grand March will be held Friday, June 11 at 8 p.m. – either on the field or in the Y field house.

Graduation will be held at 2 p.m. June 11 and each graduate will be allowed to invite four guests. Tickets are required and no one will be admitted without one. Should the ceremony be forced to move into the field house, only two guests per graduate will be admitted.

Like last year, a car parade will be held following graduation. The parade will start at the school at approximately 4 p.m., proceed through the downtown area and to Boothbay Center, then end back at the school. Each graduate can have one car in the parade, according to Crocker.

The Class Day event – a seniors-only event – will be held Wednesday morning, June 9 following Grand March practice in the BRHS gymnasium. Another seniors-only event, Senior Awards, will be held after Class Day.

The BRHS Class of 2021 will go to Millinocket June 11 for two days for its Project Graduation trip. A fundraising car wash to help pay for the trip is set for Saturday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lower parking lot at BRHS. To donate, send a check to BRHS 2021 Project Graduation at P.O.
