Palmer Payne receives ‘Spirit of America’ award

The Boothbay Harbor Board of Selectmen gave a standing ovation to local resident Palmer Payne, the 2016 recipient of the “Spirit of America” volunteer award.
“(We are) honored to nominate Palmer Payne ... for his contributions both professionally and civically,” Board Chairman Denise Griffin read at the March 14 meeting. “We wish the rest of the community volunteered for as many boards as you do.”
Payne, a native of Ohio, has lived in the region since 1994. He has served on the board of appeals, refuse district and the port committee boards. He has also served on the budget committee for many years. He served as a town selectman 15 years ago.
For the past 20-plus years Payne has been working with the VA and American Legion, helping veterans and their families with the complexities of the VA healthcare system and filing for benefits. He also assists families of veterans who have died, in support and arrangements.
“I'm overwhelmed,” Payne said while nearly in tears. “It's one thing to be recognized by a public body, but to be recognized by people who know you means a lot more.”
Payne spent his career working in the field of journalism, working for CBS and ABC. He also taught at the Columbia University School of Journalism, and served in the Armed Forces Radio during the Korean War, including being on combat patrol.
“His dedication and contributions to veterans and their families sets him apart as a unique and wonderful icon of our town and the region,” Payne's award reads in part.
