Ocean Point Column: Remembering Jim Dun and more

Tue, 02/02/2021 - 10:30am

After a relatively mild January Mother Nature wanted to remind us all what the coldest month of the year can bring and so we experienced several days of frigid temperatures this past week. As I’m writing this column on Sunday, a Nor’easter is predicted to hit on Monday night into Tuesday with heavy snow expected. I understand the Boothbay region’s weather will come Tuesday into Wednesday.

All of Ocean Point is saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Dun on Jan. 22. Jim, along with his wife Doreen, was a long time summer resident of Ocean Point. After many years of a successful career in industrial engineering Jim retired and he and Doreen made Ocean Point their full-time residence.

Jim loved Ocean Point, as well as the Boothbay area and its beauty. Jim had many interests in his life but I would guess that nature and the outdoors were one of his favorites. Jim served as past president of the Boothbay Region Land Trust and worked tirelessly to assist in preserving the natural beauty of the peninsula.

Jim was an avid gardener and could often be seen working in his yard. A fond memory for me was driving down Middle Road throughout the summer and seeing Jim on his tractor giving a big wave as I passed by. I really believe Jim enjoyed riding that tractor.

Jim was an exceedingly kind, thoughtful and caring individual who possessed a beautiful smile and a warm heart. He was devoted to his family and his friends and always made time to inquire about what was happening not only with you but with the Ocean Point community as well; he was always there to lend a helping hand in whatever needed to be done.

Several years ago Jim, along with others in the community, was instrumental in clearing and tidying up our Memorial Land on Middle Road as well as the property adjacent to it. Our community will surely miss him!

Our sincere condolences to his wife Doreen, his son Alec and wife Kelly, his daughter Catherine and husband Hugh Rappaport and to his grandchildren Mali, Liam, Julia, James and Linnea and to his sister Liz and her husband Dick Colten.

Donations may be made in Jim’s memory to the Boothbay Region Land Trust, 60 Samoset Road, P.O. Box 183,Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 https:// bblt.org. or to the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, P.O. Box 468,Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538,www.congochurchbbh.org

There is joyous news in the Clark family to celebrate! Congratulations to Devon Clark and Sean Boyle who were recently engaged at Ocean Point. With the help of Devon’s sister Abby the perfect setting was created for the event. Devon’s mom Sue described it as a clear sparkly day, glimmering water, a shimmering diamond ring and a champagne toast with family after she said yes! The couple is planning a September 2022 wedding.

If you have not recently visited Sue Clark’s website, I suggest that you do. She has created some beautiful hand-painted gilded oyster shells with different scenes that can be used as a ring holder, magnet or an ornament. Sue has also created a tool for shucking oysters called a Kraken, which I understand, will completely eliminate that messy and sometimes challenging job of oyster shucking.

You may recall that several years ago Sue compiled a pictorial history of Ocean Point called, “Past Images of Ocean Point, Maine,” which I believe is still available for sale. She also has those adorable whimsical painted fish sticks among many other items. Sue’s website is Latitude43Designs@hotmail.com and her items can also be purchased on Etsy.

For all of you golf enthusiasts, you may be interested to know that one of our former Ocean Point residents, Tim Martin and his wife Peggy are wintering in Palm Desert, California and had the opportunity to volunteer at the recent American Express Golf Tournament, formerly known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic. It was an incredible opportunity for them to witness up-close some of the world’s best golfers.

With Super Bowl Sunday this weekend, I would be remiss if I did not mention that this will be Tom Brady’s 10th appearance and playing for ring number 7. I’m sure many of you were just as upset as Will and I over his decision to leave the Patriots organization and we vowed we would not watch him play for another team! However, that decision was short-lived as every week we witnessed the GOAT having another winning season. We will be rooting for TB12 this Sunday evening; I guess I must admit, once a Brady fan always a Brady fan.

Stay healthy, safe and positive and have a great week!
