Ocean Point Column: Great weather, events and more
What an incredible Memorial Day weekend, the weather could not have been more perfect! I don’t recall a Memorial Day weekend being so beautiful and warm.
Many Ocean Pointers were on hand to open their cottages in preparation for summer. It was very nice to reconnect with Ocean Point friends after what many described as a long winter!
I understand the “clean up the point” event was well attended; thanks to all who participated in assisting with what has become an annual event.
Thanks to Anna Waldman and Lauren Palmer, the pickleball event held on Sunday of that weekend was also well attended; all had a great time.
The summer events calendar is posted on the website; there are lots of fun and interesting activities planned this summer, thank you to the Activities Committee for providing us with these events. Check the website often for the latest updates of events.
We will kick off summer events beginning the week that our new AD’s arrive, Tim and Abby Mahoney. I believe they will arrive and begin work on Monday June 26 at which time Yoga with Mary will start on that day at 8:30 and Zumba with Sarah will be held on Tuesday the 27th at 8:30. Please note these two activities have switched days from last summer, a full activity schedule is slated to begin that week.
Please take the time to introduce yourself to Abby and Tim Mahoney and their two children.
There are a few changes to our long time 4th of July traditions this year. There is an opening Porch Party on Friday evening, June 30 at 5:30 hosted by the Lindleys. Please bring an appetizer to share and your favorite beverage. This event is in lieu of our Chicken Barbecue that will not take place this summer.
Saturday morning July 1 the traditional Horribles Parade will begin promptly at 9:30 from Van Horn Road. Please contact Jonathan Dawson if you have a musical talent and would like to join our band, all are welcome.
As many of you learned at last year’s parade Will and I announced we would be stepping down as co- chairs of the parade. We enjoyed so many wonderful years as co-chairs and have many lasting memories. We both were so touched by not only the recognition given but also the beautiful plaque presented to us at last year’s annual meeting. Thank you to all!
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude not only to the activities Committee but to all of you as well. I have retired as chair of the committee and I want to thank all of you who supported me in this role. You and the committee made my tenure seem effortless and I appreciate all of your assistance, guidance and kind words, thank you!
Ginna Yerrall has taken on the position as chair of the Activities Committee so if you have ideas for activities or want to volunteer please contact her or any member of the committee.
While many of us were absent over the winter quite a few changes have taken place both in the harbor and on the Point. The footbridge is currently under construction, one of my favorite stores, the Village Store is closing, the Boothbay Greenhouse is gone, and a new restaurant, Anchor, has opened next to Flagship.
Our new Bluebird Ocean Point Inn is set to open this week after many months of construction and I was informed that Smuggler’s Cove recently changed hands, as did several cottages on the Point.
Sadly, the Brownell cottage sold, as did the Richardson cottage. These families were long-time Ocean Pointers that myself and many of you have known since childhood. Although we will certainly miss them we wish them well.
While out walking on the holiday weekend I met Nate Nichols, the new owner of the Brownell cottage. I have not met the owners of the Richardson cottage but I hope to in the near future.
Congratulations to Liam Dun on his graduation from Bates College. Liam is the son of Alec and Kelly Dun and the grandson of Doreen Dun and the late Jim Dun. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Congratulations to the graduates of the class of 2023 at Boothbay Region High School that will take place on this Friday June 9.
Congratulations and best wishes to Maura Cass and Derek Lasher who was married this past Saturday. The couple celebrated their joyous day with family and many Ocean Point friends in attendance.
A very important Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for Saturday July 1 at 4 p.m. at the Casino; please plan on attending.
One last note of importance, please send your contribution and Sport Court membership to the Ocean Point Colony trust via the website or to Treasurer Barb Klein. Tennis and pickleball fees must be paid before playing. All fees are currently posted on the website.
Have a great week!
