New England-wide awards go to BRGC

The Boothbay Region Garden Club does not operate in a vacuum. It enjoys affiliation with the Garden Club Federation of Maine (GCFM) and is also associated with New England Garden Clubs (NEGC), which counts among its members the Garden Club Federations of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

These federated clubs annually compete for awards in various categories that can enhance their standing among rival organizations. The clubs submit their applications in September and award announcements are made in October. Short circuited by COVID-19, the award ceremony for 2020 became a zoom event with certificates being mailed to recipients soon after the presentation. As Club president, Linda Bonin accepted the following certificates on behalf of BRGC:

First place certificate for New England Garden Clubs Sears Civic Development Award for continuing work by BRGC at the Armillary garden, Civil War Monument and the Butterfly Garden.

First place certificate for the Mary Stone Garden Therapy Award for continuing work by members at St. Andrews Village. Members work with residents on a variety of flower and garden related projects monthly throughout the year including the planting of container garden annuals and vegetables that are harvested for use in Village meals over the summer months.

Despite pandemic limitations, members of BRGC continue to grow their awareness of resource conservation and community consciousness. The organization always welcomes guests and new members into the fold. For more information checkout the BRGC website at www.boothbayregiongardenclub.org, or contact Alice Schambra at 633-7162.
