Make the best of summer
Windjammer Days this year were held in the foggy mist. We watched the stately vessels arrive, drop anchor and sail in and out of Linekin Bay. This yearly celebration carried out the usual visual pleasures and maintained the thrill of yester-year as the fleet arrived and departed under full sail. In awe I watched one stately vessel with sails unfurled heading down east up-country as it passed Fisherman’s Island, breezing along in graceful silence.
There will be an exciting chance to learn more about the thrills and challenges of the sea if you can join us at the Casino on July 10 at 6:30 p.m. for a literary evening presented by a Pulitzer Prize Author, Barbara Walsh, who relates a spellbinding true story.
Here at Ocean Point we've had soggy weather so frequently that all hopes of touching up the outside painting are dampened. From the long slow lines of traffic heading northward it appears that weather does not dampen the visitors' spirits. It is difficult to mow the soggy grass regularly and all our perennials are running wild and free, lovely but refusing to be tamed.
The fellow who mows for us had a tiny chipmunk jump up onto the moving mower and sit up to eat an acorn. Our little old cat then lunged out from the high grass to avoid the mower and landed on the picket fence. The two dogs joined the fray by mournful howling.
Julie Irmischer Bowes and her two children have been swimming off the dock daily despite the chilly aftermath. So many folks have arrived by now, that it seems to be a great summer ahead. The exercise classes started on July 2. Tennis and golf are in action.
We are missing our wonderful sunsets, but it can't rain all summer. I take that back because one year, long ago it seems like there were only 10 days of sunshine all summer long. Let's make the best of the rest of the summer. Pat can be reached at 207-633-3669 or 207-380-2830 and at waldman1@roadrunner.com.
