Looking forward to real summer
On Friday, Matthew Ryder came to sing. He entertains for Village residents, and invites them to sing along.
George Duszynski, back in Assisted Living from a stay in Damariscotta, came to listen and join in the singing with the rest of the audience. It was a cheerful time, and the sun came out for the occasion.
Left out of our last Village news was a welcoming coffee-and-pastry gathering for a pleasant surprise visit from former Executive Director Michael Lee and his wife, Florence.
Lee is now working in the Adirondack region of New York, where he will later be joined by his wife and daughters after school graduation.
On June 11, Independent Living residents met in the Inn’s private dining room for a so-called Town Hall meeting. Led by Executive Director Wendy Roberts, this was one of the quarterly meetings when staff reports on various departments in St. Andrews Village.
Among discussions was a review of fire safety awareness, the setting up and planting of the raised boxes outside the Pinkham Dining Room, beginning with the plant-choosing trip to Moose Crossing Greenhouses and a welcome to new residents Paul and Joyce Stucki and cottager Linda Garrett.
In the afternoon, some residents came to the Media Room to see “Consider the Conversation,” a documentary on dealing with the end of life. Then the Rev. Sarah Foulger led a discussion by the audience about their reactions to the movie.
After a winter and spring which have been hard on some of the building and fences, the Village has addressed this issue. The front doors of the Inn have been repaired and refinished, and in turn, the dining room doors have been rehung and are now, it seems, draft-free.
The fence around the Safe Havens garden is being mended and painted.
The Gregory Wing’s new fence now encloses a pleasant grassy area, paths which are wheelchair-friendly and pretty plantings. The last has been 90 percent done by the residents themselves. These improvements have taken place through the generosity of the St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary.
Halfway through June, the Village is looking forward to real summer.
