Learning Spanish is delightful at Seeds
Lissette Gonzalez-Griffin knows how to make learning the Spanish language fun and exciting for children. At Seeds of Knowledge Education Center in Wiscasset, she provides small group Spanish instruction in a multifaceted way. Gonzalez-Griffin teaches basic vocabulary through songs, books and games.
When you walk in the room, you hear the voices of children singing the welcome song and greeting each other in Spanish. Keeping the children actively engaged in learning is Gonzalez-Griffin’s strength. She moves from quiet tasks, like reading an alphabet chart, to active tasks, like singing “Cabeza, hombros, rodillas, y pies” (“Head shoulders, knees and toes”) with body motions.
When Gonzalez-Griffin reads to children, she gives them their own copy of the text to follow along. She asks questions like “What does that mean?” to monitor their understanding. Children in Gonzalez-Griffin’s Spanish class are challenged at their individual learning levels too.
One pair of students may be given some words to sort by “masculino y feminine” while others work on an easier task. In these ways, children in Gonzalez-Griffin’s class learn Spanish with ease and feel successful each week.
Starting in January, a new session of Spanish will be offered for children 4 years old through first grade on Monday at 9:30 a.m. Children in grades two through five can enroll in the homeschool session from 10:30-11:15 a.m. or the afterschool session from 3:25-4:10 p.m. The fee for this class is $90 for nine weeks.
