Last activities of the season
This will probably be another short column as there isn’t a whole lot going on after the season. The west shore is pretty much deserted except for us. Speaking of, I hope Lars and Jackie get the news of their trip to Scandinavia to Susan Bean so we can hear how it was.
Three of us have been tackling the Boothbay golf course several times this summer, and though we didn’t get outstanding scores, we had outstanding times. The threesome is Carol Burvill, Pat Ridlon and myself. What a funny threesome.
Last week we also had some fun tennis matches. It was Carol Burvill and myself against Judy and Rollie Miller. We ladies didn’t win any of the matches, but that was OK. We were going to try to play this past Friday and Saturday, but needless to say the tennis courts are soaking wet. It’ll probably be a day or so before they can be used again.
On Wednesday evening there were some terrible lightning and thunderstorms. As our cottage is on the west shore, we took the brunt of it. Wow that lightning was scary.
As usual at this time of year there are plenty of parking spaces in the Sawyer’s Island lot. But it fills up a bit on the weekends. And there is that huge RV that indicates that Dee Kitterman and her friend Pat Smith are here. Haven’t seen much of them. They have kept pretty much to the cottage up by the tennis courts.
Elizabeth Pierce is here with the two kids. What fun it is to see them wandering around the island. And Arthur’s new job is walking the dog. He tried to get the dog and our Maine coon cat together, but the cat wasn’t really up for that. There was too much barking going on.
Pat and John Ridlon have a couple of guests at their cottage: Renee and Gregg Giarrusso and Arletta and Lee Wilbur (who have been here before). In order to get them to meet the islanders, Pat had a party for a bunch of us.
Those attending were Lee and Nick Aeschliman, Carol and Peter Burvill, Deb and Arthur Pierce, Bob Esterberg, Susan and Rob Reece, Judy and Rollie Miller Betsy and Brad Hastings and Monty and me. It was a lot of fun and there were some delicious hors d’oeuvres.
Deb and Keith MacGilvra should be arriving fairly soon. As usual I’m sure they will stay for quite a while. And I think Germains will be here maybe mid-month for a bit to close up their place.
Monday the golf threesome is supposed to tackle the course once more. Hopefully we won’t get rained out again. Last time we tried to play we got poured on at the first hole. That was not fun.
On Sunday the Reece crew was spotted in the field on the west shore. Valerie and Duncan Reece were there with Gavin and Brody who had his first birthday on Saturday. Cam and Ellen Reece with Owen were also there. Also Valerie and Duncan’s friends Reina, P.T. Anni and Kaya Patel were there. They live in Easton, Mass. Valerie and Reina went to law school together. Susan and Rob were there “keeping things under control.” And the last on the list, but the most active was Holly the dog who was fetching what looked like a deflated bumper.
Please be sure to get your news to Susan Bean from now on as she (bless her heart) will be writing the column again this winter.
