Lady Seahawks win opener

Two second-half goals held up as the Boothbay Region High School Lady Seahawks field hockey team won its first game of the season, 2-1, at home over the St. Dom's Saints Wednesday, August 29.
Senior co-captain Sarah Caron put Boothbay ahead 1-0 at the 21:35 mark of the second half as she drove the ball into the net from about 20 feet away. The goal came after penalty corner pass from senior Jessica Murray.
Another senior, Alex Clarke, scored Boothbay's only other goal at the 9:10 mark, again following a penalty corner. After a scramble in front of the net, Clarke pushed the ball past the St. Dom's goalie.
St. Dom's got its goal with 2:45 left to play as Brittany Eastman scored after the Saints got behind the Boothbay defenders. Her shot came from about 10 feet away from the goal.
The Lady Seahawks came out inspired after a scoreless first half, as they put pressure on the Saints' defense for most of the second half. After getting only four penalty corner chances in the first half, Boothbay got eight in the final 30 minutes. St. Dom's only received five penalty corners in the 60-minute game. A penalty corner is awarded to the attacking (offense) team if an infraction is called against the defense when the ball is in the scoring circle.
Boothbay had nine shots on goal and St. Dom's had two.
“We came together in the second half,” Boothbay Coach Kait Iuzzolino said. “We showed great intensity. After they scored, I called a timeout to remind them that teams who score late in a close game will be inspired to score another goal, that we must play the full 60 minutes to protect the lead, which we did.” Iuzzolino said that last year, her team sometimes let down in the second half.
Caron, who led the team in scoring last season, said Monday's win “was a great way to start.”
“I think we've improved over last year,” said Caron, who shares the captaining duties with senior Arden McSwain. “We wanted to get this win for coach.”
