Lady Seahawks take on Monmouth Mustangs at home
For the first three quarters, Boothbay led by as many as 9 points, but poor shot selection and sloppy ball handling let Monmouth claw their way back to within 3 points at the end of the third quarter.
With 53 seconds left to play in the game, Sarah Caron drove down the lane for two points, knotting the game at 45 apiece. On the next possession, Abby McLellan snagged a rebound from Monmouth, only to have the ball stripped from behind causing a late turnover in transition. McLellan then fouled out of the game, putting Monmouth’s Kylie Kemp at the free throw line.
Kemp shot 10 for 12 from the foul line, with 7 of those points scored in the fourth quarter. Kemp made both shots, bumping the Mustangs up 47-45. During Boothbay’s next possession, with 1.2 seconds left on the clock, Allison Crocker got fouled in the act of shooting a three point-field goal, putting the senior captain at the line for three shots. Crocker made one of three, falling just short of a tie game, rounding off Boothbay’s record to 1-1 for the regular season.
Monmouth Academy’s junior guard, Kylie Kemp led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Boothbay’s senior captain Sarah Caron with 16 points.
“Defensively we gave up too many points. We could have moved the ball better and just played with a little bit more poise and patience,” Grover said.
While Monmouth Academy failed to match Boothbay’s size, Grover said Monmouth made an effort to take away the Seahawks inside game. He said the first half was played at Boothbay’s pace, while the second half belonged to Monmouth. “We attempted to regain it in the fourth, but we gave up too many buckets in transition,” Grover said.
The Lady Seahawks varsity team will face off against the Winthrop Ramblers at home at 7 p.m. December 12.

Original post: The Boothbay Region High School Lady Seahawks (1-0) basketball team is preparing for its home opener against Monmouth Academy (0-0) at 7 p.m. tonight, Dec. 7. Boothbay is coming off its first win of the season December 8 in Carrabec, and are looking to up the number in the win column with a victory over the Mustangs on home turf.
Boothbay Head Coach Tanner Grover said the Mustangs thrive on chaos, and their game play will be unpredictable. Monmouth's varsity team returned four players who were sidelined last year with knee injuries.
“Typically they're aggressive. They like to press and try to create turnovers,” he said. “I know Monmouth is not very big, so I expect full court pressure,” he said
Grover said he expects a victory for the Seahawks if they use their size advantage, and take care of the ball.
