Lady Seahawks stomp Ramblers
The Lady Seahawks (2-1) came off the bench prepared to pack a punch. Any memory of the loss to Monmouth had been erased as Boothbay pulverized the Winthrop Ramblers 76-18, December 12 at Porter Memorial Gymnasium.
By the end of the first quarter, Boothbay had jumped out to a 20-6 lead, having forced 11 Winthrop turnovers. From there on out, the Lady Seahawks never looked back as Winthrop could not contend with the speed and skill set of Boothbay's arsenal.
Junior guard Abby McLellan nabbed 8 steals and finished with 19 points as the game's top scorer. Senior captains Alex Clarke finished with 17 points, and Allison Crocker with 12, as Boothbay's bigs dominated the inside post.
“I think we were very focused defensively,” Head Coach Tanner Grover said. “We had some patience on the offensive side and made a concerted effort to go inside early, and that kind of opened up our perimeter game.”
Every Lady Seahawk contributed to Boothbay's victory Grover said. “Hannah Morley did a great job getting the team to where they needed to be, and tonight was the first night that I really felt comfortable playing Morgan Crocker,” he said. “Having her coming off the bench for us was really a boost.”
Crocker was recovering from a concussion sustained earlier during a preseason game, had 2 steals, 9 points and 2 assists against Winthrop.
Grover has two full practices to prepare his team to face off against Spruce Mountain (2-0), 7 p.m, December 15, in Jay. The undefeated Spruce Mountain girls varsity team will be a tough opponent, Grover said.
Spruce Mountain's mode of operation is using pressure defense and scoring points off of turnovers, a method that Boothbay enacted against Winthrop.
“We're going to focus on taking care of the ball, and making sure offensively we have a better idea of where we want to put the ball,” Grover said. “If we can bring the same level of defense we brought tonight up to Spruce Mountain, then I think we have a shot of going up there and coming out with a win.”
