Oak Hill had to earn every point they scored against Boothbay as the Lady Seahawks' tenacious defense held the Raiders to just 29 points to Boothbay's 46 December 18 in Wales.

Following an offensively sluggish first quarter, the Lady Seahawks were able to pick up the momentum in the second period by hitting four 3-pointers against the Raiders' zone defense, boosting Boothbay to a 13 point lead at halftime.

With the pace of the game in Boothbay's favor, the Lady Seahawks (3-2) maintained control for the second half, adding yet another loss to Oak Hill's (0-5) record.

“We really won that game because of our defense," Boothbay Coach Tanner Grover said.

Grover commended 5'11'' freshman forward Avae Traina's defensive prowess. Traina grabbed four defensive rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal. “That was Aeva's best game of the year,” he said. “She's a player we expect big things from down the road.”

Abby McLellan led Boothbay in scoring, netting two 3-pointers in the second quarter and finished the game with 13 points. Alex Clarke followed with 11 points.

“(Clarke) was just really aggressive inside. She came to play on the offensive end,” Grover said.

It was a good win for the Lady Seahawks, but there remains a lot of room for improvement Grover said. Boothbay has struggled so far this season with turnovers, having committed 20 turnovers against Oak Hill. Grover has continually stressed the need to take care of the ball, and that won't change for when the Lady Seahawks take on Madison, this Saturday at home.

Grover said he expects to see plenty of full court pressure from the undefeated Bulldogs from Madison. From the start of the season, Grover has marked his calender, anticipating one of the major matchups in Mountain Valley Conference.

“Take the kids out, hire some babysitters, do what you need to do,” Grover said. “We need Seahawk Nation to come out in full force.”
