Kudos to fire departments
Bravo to the combined forces of the Edgecomb, Wiscasset, Newcastle and Boothbay Fire Departments, who rescued an injured Deck House student last week. Glad to hear the injuries were not too serious. And it was exciting to see a LifeFlight helicopter on a landing zone at the town's fire station!
And to Rona Lugosch for giving the local Girl Scouts a tour of her PeaPod jewelry studio and store on Davis Island.
Congratulations to Bob Thomas and John Lorence, whose works have been accepted for the River Arts "Abstract" exhibit which opened last Thursday and will run through January 16. Thomas has two paintings from a series, "Altered Grounds" numbers 33 and 71. Lorence's work is "Cut Shapes."
The show features 80 pieces of art in all, including sculptures, by 60 different artists from all over Maine. River Arts is located at 241 US Route 1 N in Damariscotta, open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed on Mondays. For more information call River Arts at 563-1507 or visit their website www.riverartsme.org.
Up the road and over the town line, I was pleased to learn that the Frances Perkins House is being considered for listing as a National Historic Landmark. Boxing Day is December 26, not for pugilists, nor for movers, but anciently for the lord of the manor to present gifts to his tenants and servants. I prefer the modern spin, an opportunity for neighbors and friends to come around for holiday cheer.
So I bid you all the best Boxing Day, and not long off, the start of a new year. Elections, Olympics, oh my! Last column of 2013 from 234 River Road, 207-633-2978 and jocam@tidewater.net.
