Keeping busy
Here are some Southport events to keep you busy. The Southport Island Association and Southport Yacht Club are hosting an end of summer walk and potluck dinner on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Please park at SYC, leaving your potluck contribution (appetizer, salad, main dish) in the kitchen and then enjoy a walk before dinner.
Return to SYC to socialize until 6 p.m. when the potluck is served. Please bring beverages of your choice and serving utensils for your potluck dish. Ice, dessert and coffee will be provided. If you have any questions, call Russ Jackson at 207-633-2003. Bad weather? Arrive at 5 p.m. to heat dishes and socialize and have the dinner.
Now off to making “my rounds” of the island. Stopping at the Southport Central School, home of the Seals (their new mascot). This year has just 21 students. Teacher Liz Reed tells me that the school has started offering a breakfast program.
Next stop was the Southport Gift barn and met Susan Endicott as she was delivering the “famed photographer and writer” Robert Mitchell calendar. Sure … you can purchase yours at the Gift barn, now open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day but Tuesdays.
Perhaps you saw the signs this past weekend directing friends and family to Morgan and Andrei’s “Celebration of Love.” Morgan is the daughter of Susan Endicott and Robert Mitchell. Morgan and Andrei were married last July; Morgan had to be off to finish college (not much time to plan a wedding). This was their celebration time to share with friends from many countries, Korea, Taiwan, Ukraine, Romania, Turkey, Iran … and, of course, sister Meg came in from Vermont.
Bravo to the Southport tennis “girls” group who had their annual dinner this week at Holly Smith’s home. They have been playing for 45 years, usually three times a week. Congratulations to Jane Lunt, Holly Smith, Jane Norton, Anne Vartabedian and Gunilla Whiting.
Karyl Bannister Conant has decided to “retire” from publishing and writing the almost monthly as she called it, newsletter Cook and Tell. However, she says there “may” be a book in the future. Copies of those newsletters with the recipes and fun chatter are always at the Southport Memorial Library.
Mentioning the library reminds me that is a new exhibit there “Here and There En Plein Air” featuring 25 original watercolors by artist Tony van Hasselt. Library is open Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Now you know I always check with the Southport bridge for any news. George says all is well there as they continue to open every half hour until September 30, then will go to “on demand.”
The Newagen Inn continues to invite the island residents to the entertainment in the pub on Sunday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. when Arthur Webster plays. Dave Gagne plays in the pub on Thursday nights.
The contractor, Eco-Analysts, that has been handling the preapplication site evaluation and project design for the proposed dredging project for South Beach/Cat Ledges on Pratts Island indicates that the application is no longer being considered. Which means there will be no application and no dredging of that area.
This is a reminder of the meeting at the Southport Town Hall at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18 to vote for the Hendricks Head Beach property purchase and use.
Now here is a quiz : What does Maine have only one of, while all the other states have two or more?
Leigh will have the answer next week. Or you can check with Donald Duncan (the puzzle master).
