Josey Smith, a 2020 senior at Boothbay Region High School, will be attending Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina in the fall. She has played field hockey for Boothbay since she was 9 years old, in recent years she has also played on club teams in the off season to improve her skills on the field. She has always been known as a defender, protecting the goal and sending the ball back into offensive play has always been her place on the field. Although she’s not known for scoring she’s definitely known for her long drive to clear the ball. A force to be reckoned with you could say, there’s been some fear shown from her opponents when she connects with the ball. She has played field hockey all four years for the Seahawks and closed out her career with the Seahawks as a team captain.

In November of 2018, Josey attended the Shooting Stars Field Hockey tournament in Richmond, Virginia. This is a showcase where college coaches can view the participants in play and select players they’d like to recruit for their teams. With that being said Josey was scouted, recruited and has committed to play for the Converse Valkyries on a Division II scholarship.

This is a newer program for Converse, Josey will be entering their fourth season. They’ve made great strides in the last three years landing as the #1 team for Division II on the Helper Helper rankings and #7 on the NCSA rankings. The Valkyries coach has built the team to 24 girls this coming season, Josey will join six other freshmen who come from Colorado, Maryland, California, Germany and The Netherlands (two). She is the only defender being recruited this season. Converse College is a small college with plenty of southern charm with approximately 800 girls enrolled. Josey will be entering their last class of all girls. In 2021 they will become co-ed.

Josey will study biology while attending Converse College.
