James McCarthy at Southport Memorial Library
Journalist and photographer James McCarthy is the featured artist of the month in May and June at the Southport Memorial Library.
McCarthy's work has appeared in juried exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Butler Institute of Art and the Chocolate Church Arts Center in Bath. Since the 1970s, his art has been included in various group and solo shows.
The “Now & Then” exhibit at the library included black and white photos of landscapes and portraits taken in Main over the past four decades, including a selection from the summers of 1974 and 1976 when he lived on Southport Island.
“Southport Island is where I fell in love with Maine and its people,” McCarthy said. “It's also where I realized that photography, not painting, is the path I was meant to take as a visual artist. Everything I've accomplished as a journalist and photographer these past 40 years is rooted in experiences I had during those two summers.”
McCarthy can be contacted at mccarthyj86@gmail.com and through his website, www.mccarthyphotojournal.com.
The Southport Memorial Library is located at the tip of the island at 1032 Hendricks Hill Road. Library hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Evening hours are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information, call the library at 207-633-2741.
