Hasch: Phone call likely saved Boothbay Harbor overdose victim
Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Bob Hasch reported that a person who had overdosed in a Boothbay Harbor apartment was revived early Saturday morning, March 26.
Lincoln County 911 dispatchers received a call at 12:40 a.m. from an anonymous caller who reported that a person had overdosed and needed assistance. The person gave dispatchers an address, which Boothbay Harbor Police Officer Tom Chryplewicz soon found was the wrong address. When Chryplewicz arrived at the correct apartment, he found the person alone, unconscious, unresponsive and not breathing. Boothbay Region Ambulance Service also responded to the scene. Chief Hasch said Chryplewicz and ambulance service EMTs were able to revive the person with Narcan, an opiate antidote, and the individual was transported to the hospital. Hasch said residues of the drug taken were being analyzed and police believe it was heroin or some other opiate-based narcotic.
Hasch said there were a number of disturbing elements in the case and police are still investigating. Police believe the overdose victim, whose name has not been released, was with four or five other people at the time. These individuals apparently all left when the overdose occurred and only one of them called 911; without that phone call, the person would have likely died, Hasch said. Police are also investigating whether or not the overdose victim was also robbed while incapacitated.
“We’ve received quite a bit of information in this case but would welcome other people coming forward with their input,” Hasch said.
