Harbor Theatre schedule
The Harbor Theatre presents the final screening of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” Thursday, August 2 at 7 p.m. On Friday, August 3, Wes Anderson's comedy “Moonrise Kingdom” returns.
Boothbay Harbor's most popular film this year, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” is a British comedy-drama directed by John Madden, based on the 2004 novel, “These Foolish Things,” by Deborah Moggach. It follows a group of British retirees who, enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel, decide to save money by retiring to India. They arrive to find their accommodations have been misrepresented in the ad. The hotel hasn't been restored to palatial splendor – the owner, (Dev Patel- “Slumdog Millionaire”), hopes someday to restore the hotel.
Veteran British actors Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, & Maggie Smith lead the all-star cast. Roger Ebert of Chicago Sun-Times calls the film “A charming, funny and heartwarming movie …a smoothly crafted entertainment that makes good use of seven superb veterans.”
Wes Anderson's quirky comedy, “Moonrise Kingdom,” returns Friday. Filmed in Rhode Island, this popular comedy-drama, with music by Benjamin Britten takes place in 1965 on an island off the coast of New England. It is the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing and the peaceful island community is turned upside down. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff, Edward Norton the Khaki Scout troop leader. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl's parents. The cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as the boy and girl.
Minneapolis Star Tribune calls “Moonrise Kingdom” an “unadulterated delight,” and the Wall Street Journal says, “beguiling and endearing.”
The Harbor Theatre's fund-raising campaign to raise money to convert to digital projection has raised $15k to date. The theatre needs $65k to be able to stay in business after September 2012.
