The go-go 'Hawks

Defense, speed, pitching and a good mix of power. Several veterans will pace the team while the prospects develop.
Sound familiar?
No, it's not the Olde Towne Team, but the new-look Seahawks, who open the season with optimism and a blend of old and new players.
The Boothbay Region High School boys varsity baseball team will begin its season Monday, April 22 at home against Carrabec.
The team should be well-stocked with talent as 21 players have signed on to play under Brent Barter, Eddie Crocker and Richard Reed.
Of those 21 players, the demographics are nearly split even between under- and upperclassmen, which should make for an interesting mix, Barter said.
“Believe we'll win a lot of close games,” he said. “Half the team is made up of seniors and juniors and we haven't had so many seniors in years; we haven't had this many players in a long, long time.”
The influx of new players along with the returning seniors, juniors and sophomores has other benefits, Barter added.
“We're going to have a strong pitching staff; we have seven or eight good pitchers,” he said. “We're deep at every position.”
Seniors Cormac Miller, Stephen Barter, Nate Colcord, Linc Simmons and Jesse Peters form the core of that veteran leadership and also provide a healthy dose of power for the lineup which is coming off a winless 2012 season. But, 2013 looks different already, the coaches said.
“We have a lot of young, developing talent and some seasoned guys who will pick up the leadership roles,” Crocker said.
But this team will be more like the 2013 iteration of the Boston Red Sox: more running, and increased attention to pitching and defense.
Crocker said the team should be able to eke out wins with a multi-faceted approach.
“I think we'll win some close games,” he said. “We have a lot of quickness; we want them to put the ball on the ground and move runners around.”
