Girl Scout troop tops cookie sale goals

On Saturday, March 16, Girl Scout Troop 526 hosted its only cookie booth for the 2019 sale season at the Meadow Mall. A drive-up service the members and leaders had designed was hopping all morning long.

By noon, some flavors had sold out, but the girls said there were still plenty of their favorites which included S’mores, Thanks A Lots and Peanut Butter Patties. The troop’s recordkeeper, Abby, reported the best sellers were easily Caramel Delights and Thin Mints.

The troop members are all third graders from Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb, Newcastle and Waldoboro. Most have been together since first grade.

The girls’ goal was to sell 1,700 boxes to fund an overnight camp-in to the Boston Science Center. Their hard work paid off and in pre-sales alone Troop Leader Tonia Blake shared they had sold more than 2,000 boxes. Blake and fellow leaders Krystal Hodgdon and Loretta Raburn explained they planned to use some of the funds earned to complete a beach cleanup service project this spring. The girls told the Boothbay Register they still had to vote on which beach.

There was also an opportunity to buy cookies and have the troop deliver them to a local Meals on Wheels program for those who might have already consumed their fair share this cookie season.

The troop had invested a lot of time in creating colorful banners and signs to draw passers by to the sale. Carol Copan of Wiscasset was on a trip to source some craft supplies at the St. Andrews and Creature Comforts thrift stores when the girls lured her over to the booth. ReAnna Heino of Boothbay Harbor made a specific trip to the sale and went home with five boxes. The girls proudly deposited her $20 bill in the cash bag and recorded her cookie choices on their sales sheet.
