Free college essay workshop for juniors May 24 at Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library
Local high school juniors planning to apply to college this fall are invited to a free college essay writing workshop on Saturday, May 24 at noon at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. The workshop, led by college essay coach Leigh Perkins of Southport, is designed to help students get a head start on one of the most important — and often most stressful — parts of the college application process.
A pizza lunch will be provided, and attendees will get an overview of the process, learn what makes a great college essay, how to choose a compelling topic, and how to approach the writing process with confidence and clarity. The workshop is open to all current 11th graders in the Boothbay region, regardless of school.
“This is the perfect time for students to begin thinking about their college essays,” says Perkins. “Summer gets busy fast, and most students put off writing until the fall, when school, sports, and application deadlines collide. Starting now, with guidance and support, gives applicants a huge advantage.”
Students who attend Saturday’s workshop will have the opportunity to continue working one-on-one with Perkins over the summer — at no cost — to complete their Common App personal statements.
Perkins has coached hundreds of students around the world on college essays and application writing. A veteran English teacher and former journalist, she now specializes in helping students tell their stories with authenticity and impact. Space is limited, so interested students (or their family members) are encouraged to register online at https://bbhlibrary.org/news/essay-writing/ or by emailing Bethany Schmidt at tech@bbhlibrary.org.
