Eugene H. Knight passed away at the age of 95 on July 10, 2021. He was a resident of the Hawthorne House in Freeport, Maine.
Eugene was born on Feb. 13, 1926, to Ernest O. Knight and Effie K. Knight. He graduated from Gardiner High School in 1944.
He worked for A & P Tea Company until he attended the University of Maine in Orono, studying chemical engineering. He went into the U.S. Army and played in the band at Fitzsimmons Hospital of Denver, Colorado. After his service, he studied accounting at the Bentley School of Accounting in Boston and graduated first in his class. He was recruited by General Electric into their business training program.
He returned to Maine in 1959 and ran Mr.Gene’s Beauty Salon in Boothbay Harbor for 28 years. Upon retiring from that business, he returned to accounting work for the Spruce Point Inn and the Boothbay Harbor Inn. He retired in 2004.
Eugene was active in community theatre, both in Syracuse, New York and Boothbay Harbor. He sang in the Sheepscot Valley Musical Arts Society and the Lincoln Arts Festival Chorus and served on the Board of Directors as treasurer for both organizations.
He was predeceased by a sister Rita and husband Joe Bowman and niece Linda Guido. He was also predeceased by his life partner of 56 years, Harold Farmer.
Eugene is survived by niece Pamela and husband Mike Banker and nephew Philip and wife Anne Bowman, several grand nieces, and nephews. He was loved by his many friends throughout Maine and beyond.
