There she is, Miss Windjammer 2016: Emerson Harris. The 11-year-old tap-danced and sang her way to the first Miss Windjammer title June 28 at the event’s first ever pageant, held at the Boothbay Region YMCA.

Harris competed against seven other local contestants. The first runner-up was Della Morse Hahn and second runner-up was Hannah Hills.

The contestants were judged by their interview, poise, talent, and overall impression. Harris was sponsored by the Southport Island Association. She sang and tap- danced to “Singing in the Rain.” During the interview portion, Harris indicated her desired profession was to be a pediatrician.

“Every child should have good health care no matter how much money they  have,” she said.

The contestants were also asked what they’d do to make the world better. Harris said showing kindness would make a big difference. “The little things are what matters so I think kindness is the easiest thing for everybody to do whether it’s saying ‘hello’ or ‘good job,’ or even a hug.”

Her hobbies include singing, dancing and acting. She recently tried sailing and said it was “awesome.”

Harris learned to tap-dance in the past year. This is her first pageant.

“I wanted to try something new and this was such a wonderful experience,” she said. “I never tried anything like this before and I’m so happy it turned out so well.”

The other contestants included Avery Barter, Jordan Chamness, Emily Echols, Suzannah Star Edwards and Alexis Manowski.

The pageant had four judges: Brenda Blackman, former director of The Miss Shrimp Pageant and vice-president and branch manager of the First National Bank of Damariscotta,  former school teacher Leigh Sherrill, Carousel Music Theatre producer and artistic director Rob Barnard, and television and movie actress Mary-Linda Rapelye, who guest-starred on the original Star Trek series.

The First National Bank of Damariscotta sponsored the pageant.
