Drinking water protection

    Dear Editor:

I read with interest Hal Moorefield’s article on the Register’s website on the matter of drinking water quality and protection. As is noted, the focus of the first lecture in the series will be on Adams Pond and Knickerbocker Lake, which provide water for year-round customers as well as the seasonal system that functions for roughly six months each year. What seems to be missing from these presentations is a discussion of the groundwater resource and the associated wells from which about half of the residences on the Boothbay peninsula get their water supply for at least six months each year.

The Five Year Plan for the town of Boothbay, completed in 2015 as I remember, included provisions for an assessment of the groundwater resource as part of the review of the Land Use and Zoning provisions of town ordinances. Has anything been done to make these assessments or determine the impact on Land Use, Zoning or other code provisions? If not, now would seem to be a good time to do it.
