Dirigo holds off Boothbay 4-3

Tue, 10/15/2019 - 7:30pm

Goalie Jaelyn Crocker gave her teammates a chance to tie or win, but the Dirigo Cougars escaped with a 4-3 win over the Boothbay Region Seahawks Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Perkins Field.

Crocker, a sophomore, made at least 25 saves in the second half, stopping a barrage of shots and clearing the ball with kicks, after Dirigo had built leads of 3-0 and 4-1.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead on two goals by Kailey Hackett at the 26- and 24-minute marks. Jace Brophy made it 3-0 with a goal with 13 minutes to play in the first half.

Senior tri-captain Chloe Arsenault (three goals) put Boothbay on the scoreboard with a goal with 11 minutes to play in the half.

Scoring Dirigo’s eventual final goal was Morgan Woods with just over 25 minutes to play. Despite being down three goals again, the Seahawks didn’t quit.

Arsenault got her second goal with 15 minutes to play to draw the Seahawks to within two. About six minutes later, Dirigo was called for an infraction in the scoring area, which gave Boothbay a penalty shot. Arsenault took the shot and lifted it past the goalie’s right shoulder to make the score 4-3.

The Cougars held off a few more Boothbay scoring chances off penalty corners and Crocker held off the Dirigo onslaught of chances in the final minutes before time ran out.

With the win, Dirigo finishes the regular season with a 9-5 record and is seeded fourth in Class C North. With the loss, Boothbay finishes the regular season with a 5-9 record. The Seahawks are seeded sixth in Class C South and will most likely face St. Dominic Academy in the quarterfinal round of the Class C South tournament next week.

Tuesday’s game was the final regular season home game for the senior tri-captains, Arsenault, Hali Goodwin and Josey Smith, who were honored before the game. They were presented with handmade mini field hockey sticks with their names and numbers on them and carnations, which they presented to their parents. On hand to help them celebrate were young field hockey players, who also gave an exhibition of play at halftime.
