The Boothbay region has a long history of military service dating back to the Civil War, yet it does not have a granite memorial honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country. An exploratory committee has been formed to see if it would be possible to create a monument in Boothbay as it is the most central location to Southport Island, East Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor and Edgecomb. The committee consists of David Patch and Ross and Trina Ragan of American Legion Post #36; Dan Bryer, Boothbay Town Manager and Maine National Guard; Robert Rice, Vietnam veteran; Ben Kaler, Iraqi War veteran; Van Reid, Edgecomb author and historian; and Sarah A. Sherman, Boothbay region veterans’ historian.

The group will be working together over the next few months to determine the feasibility of creating a memorial to honor all Boothbay Region Service Members Killed in Action or who died while serving in the United States Military. Areas of research will include wars covered by the memorial, possible locations, designs, costs, time frame for construction, and installation logistics. Upon completion of their research a report will be presented to the Boothbay selectmen for their consideration.
