Busy week for yacht club members
The past week has been very busy one for all BHYC members and staff. Let’s start with the Dock Party, so ably developed and presented by Alice and Andy Mutch. What started as a rainy/foggy impossible day turned into brilliant sunshine about 20 minutes before the party began.
No fewer than 12 members boats graced the docks and withstood the 18K Southerly that graced our presence. Chef George outdid himself in presenting a gigantic Paella. Thanks to all of Alice’s committee.
And then there was the Friday night happy hour and gamblers dinner. Names of all the BHYC members were placed in a big bowl and those present were eligible to win. Commodore Neil drew the names and John Anderson won.
But the rules say that you had to be present to win and John wasn’t (I did see him later in the weekend however), and so the $50 dining credit rolls over to next Friday when the prize will be $100. The other piece of the event was a bar happy hour from 1700 to 1830 with all libations discounted by 50 percent. See you there next Friday.
Tonight is the Fireworks dinner and Chef has created a fabulous buffet (1900 to 2030) to celebrate the event. I suspect that by the time this appears in print the reservations will be closed but it doesn’t hurt to try.
The Junior Program, under the direction of Capt. Sally Lloyd and Larry Rioux, is breaking all records for enrollments at the start of the season. The kids are excited, the boats and courts are functioning well and our staff is fantastic. If you have children or grandchildren planning on weeks later on, please file your registrations now to avoid disappointment.
Saturday is the Boothbay Harbor One Design Rendezvous event and luncheon at the club, starting at 1100 and featuring open racing. Sunday is the annual Around Southport Race sponsored jointly by BHYC and Southport Yacht Club. And Sunday night is the couples Bridge event and supper.
Monday night the Junior Program has a family potluck dinner and party and Tuesday night. Danny Beal is back at the keyboard with more of his award winning music.
Please note in your calendars that Sunday night, July 14, our own Mel Rines will be the featured speaker at the Sunday lecture Series. This is a night not to be missed so make reservations to be sure of space.
Our thanks to Bud Hawley of Southport for his service as Pro (Principal Race Officer) of the annual BHYC Regatta which will take place on August 3 and 4 and which is annually the largest race on the coast of Maine each summer. There is no question but that BHYC is the premier sail racing club on the coast of Maine. We thank all of you who make this status a position of pride and respect.
We should not go another week without saluting Donna Brewer for all of her heroic work in the club office. In a short few years Donna has become a vital cog in the wheel that makes BHYC go ‘round and we want her to know how much she is appreciated.
Have you met the new stewards working with Graham Cochrane? Capt. John Noone hails from Georgetown and Howard Friant is the son of Howard and Mary Ev of Seagate Motel fame. Capt. Sally Lloyd, Director of the Junior Sailing Program and Director of Waterfront Operations will be taking the wheel of the launch from time to time after the Junior program is over for the season.
Mark your calendars for next Thursday, a busy day, with Writing Life Stories at 1000, Bridge play at 1300, and new member orientation at 1600.
