BRHS set to graduate 49
The graduating seniors of Boothbay Region High School will embark on a week-long victory lap as the 2016 school year draws to a close. Friday, June 10 is graduation day with a scheduled 2 p.m. ceremony. In total, 49 seniors will take their walk across the stage to receive diplomas from BRHS Principal Dan Welch and Superintendent of Schools Eileen King. After the traditional graduation theme of Pomp and Circumstance, Class President and Salutatorian Hannah Morley will deliver the Welcome Address.
Giving the Honor Essay will be Gabriel C. Purin.
After the class sings the alma mater, Valedictorian Gretchen Elizabeth Elder will give the Farewell Address.
The BRHS Vocal Ensemble will sing "I Dreamed/I Lived" before Superintendent King gives her address to the class of 2016.
Class advisor Allan Crocker will then introduce each senior as they step forward to receive their diploma.
The commencement will draw to a close as the 49 students officially become freshly minted high school graduates.
In the morning on June 10, from 8 to 9:30, the class will celebrate itself during the annual Class Day festivities. The public is invited to attend.
After the graduation ceremony, the Grand March and Alumni Ball begins at 8 p.m.
The Grand March and Alumni Ball is sponsored by the Alumni Association. Parents or representatives in the “Parade of Parents” are guests of the Alumni Association, and will be admitted free of charge. This year’s Alumni Couple are Glenn Tilton and his daughter, Elizabeth, who will lead the parents in. Music for the Alumni Ball will be provided by Calvin Crocker. The BRHS Alumni Ball is one of the oldest of its kind in the country, said Lynn Orne Martin, president of the Alumni Association.
“We are one of the few schools left who carry on this tradition,” said Orne Martin. “It's a way to pass the baton from alumni to seniors. They become official graduates.”
At 7:45 p.m., parents will line up in preparation for the “Parade of Parents” into the gymnasium. Admission for the Graduation Ball is $5 per person, cash only. Tickets are not sold in advance, nor is reserved seating available. Doors open at 7 p.m.
The BRHS class of 2016 will depart for its Project Graduation class trip to the Forks for whitewater rafting at around 10 p.m.
